Clark Gable was a film actor in the 1930s. When Kirk and Spock traveled back in time to 1930 to find Dr. McCoy, Kirk was planning to view a movie with Edith Keeler but was unfamiliar with Gable. Keeler mentioned that someone else she knew, a Dr. McCoy, also didn't know who Gable was, alerting Kirk and Spock to McCoy's presence.[1][2]
