In 2265, while conducting an archaeological dig on planet M-113, studying the remains left behind by a long-dead humanoid civilization, Nancy Crater was killed by the M-113 Creature. Nancy's husband, Professor Robert Crater, was initially revulsed by it, though he accepted that it was a sentient lifeform and helped it to continue to survive. A year later, on Stardate 1513.1, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 visited the planet, to conduct the archaeologists' required annual physical examinations and resupply. During the course of their visit, the crew discovered that Nancy had been killed and replaced by the creature, which was believed to be the last survivor of its species; it fed upon salt, which it drained from the bodies of its victims. It also had incredible telepathic abilities, and could make others perceive it in any form it wished. When it was discovered, however, the creature had boarded the Enterprise, where it killed several crew members, and it was killed while attempting to feed upon Captain Kirk.
