Rodinium was the hardest substance known to Federation science in 2266. Cast rodinium was used in the protective shielding of installations like the outposts along the Romulan Neutral Zone. On Stardate 1709.2, a new plasma torpedo developed by the Romulan Star Empire proved able to completely overwhelm and neutralize even rodinium, leaving fragments that were brittle and easily crushed by hand.[1]
