Robert Crater[1] was a professor of archaeology. In 2202, he and his wife, Nancy, traveled to planet M-113[2] to study the ruins left behind by an extinct civilization. Nancy was killed circa 2205 by the M-113 creature, which was apparently the last of its kind, but Robert spared its life when he realized that Nancy's death was an act of self-preservation by the creature, which fed upon salt. It took her form and lived with him until Stardate 1513.8, when the visiting U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 exposed the truth. The creature, having beamed aboard the ship to feed upon the crew, killed Crater before it, too, was killed.[3][4]
