Commissioned in 2285, the Federation Starship Excelsior, known as the "Great Experiment," served as a test-bed for experiments with transwarp drive[1] before the project was ultimately abandoned. Originally under the leadership of Captain Robert Styles,[1] command was later transferred to Captain Hikaru Sulu.[2]
