- The pilot episode "The Cage" is completed and delivered to executives at NBC's New York offices, and rejected as "too cerebral." In an unprecedented move, however, a second pilot is ordered, and a list of changes to the series is provided.[1]
June
- Gene Roddenberry, having been given the go-ahead to commission three scripts as candidates for a second pilot, pens two, "The Omega Glory" and "Mudd's Women," and Samuel A. Peeples writes the third, "Where No Man Has Gone Before." NBC chooses the third script, and schedules production to begin in July. Jeffrey Hunter is no longer available, and the role of the captain must be recast.[1]
August
- 25 August: Ross Dowd dies.
