A variant of the Leopard class destroyer, the Jaguar class war cruiser (CW), introduced in 2270, eventually became the most common class of cruiser fielded by the Lyran Star Empire. The amount of firepower available to the class was considered marginal, and the original design was grossly inadequate in terms of power, making it slow and weak, but this was corrected in subsequent refits. The CW featured a crew complement of 340, a capacity of five shuttlecraft, and was equipped with two science labs, four transporters, two tractor beam emitters, and two mech tractors. The class was armed with two Expanding Sphere Generators, three banks of Type-3 disruptors, two banks of Type-1 phasers, four banks of Type-2 phasers, and four banks of Type-3 phasers. The CW remained in service until 2284, when it was superseded by the CW+ refit, introduced in 2278. The CW+, which addressed the power issues of the CW, also featured stronger shields and remained in service until 2298, when it was superseded by the CWP refit, introduced in 2286. The CWP variant added two banks of Type-1 disruptors.

The commando war cruiser (CWG) variant, which was intended to support planetary assaults, was introduced in 2276 but was rarely seen. The CWG featured a crew complement of 390 — including 170 Marines housed in four barracks — an 11-shuttle capacity, and was equipped with two science labs, four transporters, two tractor beam emitters, and two mech tractors. The CWG was armed with two Expanding Sphere Generators, four banks of Type-2 phasers, and four banks of Type-3 phasers. It remained in service until 2300, when it was superseded by the CWG+ refit, introduced in 2288, which featured stronger shields.[1]
