Nexus Issue 8 (Magazine)
Silence. I remember the silence the most. —Dennis R. Ricketts, "Patrol."
It is 1984 and Nexus #8 had just been released. This issue had "History of the Second World War" which was background for a game of the same name and Starfire with a history of their Orions. Of course there was a section on the Star Fleet Universe, too. In that section you would find "Patrol" by Dennis R. Ricketts, an article on names of Federation ships, some scenarios, term papers, and the Academy. These appeared along with a Q&A with Steve Cole. There was also the inevitable (at the time) collection of errata.
Starfire had a good number of articles. There was one on the Khanate of Orion, one on Khanate Military Service, and one on incidents from the first interstellar war. There was also an interesting pair of articles examining balanced design.
For the historical gamer there was the aforementioned background on the forthcoming game History of the Second World War and a timeline of events in the Russian campaigns. There was also a scenario for Battlewagon ("The Last Sortie of the Yamato," released in PDF as "Battlewagon Article #3"). There were reviews of the computer games Computer Football Strategy, Telengard, Cyborg, and The Pharaoh's Curse.

In Y179, a patrol of F-18's became the first to encounter the new Klingon G-1 gunboats.
SN9.0 Patrol, Part II
Having destroyed the fighters, the G-1 s went on to destroy their carrier. Federation relief forces were on the way, and the G-1 s only had time for one pass.

SN10.0 Ares is Down!

The Federation destroyer Ares was on a routine patrol near the Tholian order in Y168 when its warp engine overloaded and had to be jettisoned. The saucer made a forced landing on a planet in Tholian territory. The Federation considered the incident to be a non-military rescue situation; the Tholians cosidered it to be a clandestine operation to spy on their territory. Negotiations proved fruitless (as they had only three years previously), and the new sector Commodore, Richard Grey in his flagship Excalibur, was sent to rescue the crew. Grey's orders were to get the crew off of the planet with the minimum use of force.
