D'deridex class (STO)
The D'deridex class warbird battlecruiser was the foundation of the Romulan Star Empire's forces in the 24th century. Drastically more massive than the T'liss and Dhelan classes, the D'deridex was significantly more resilient and carried firepower comparable to a Federation Galaxy class starship. When the first D'deridex class warbirds began appearing along the Neutral Zone after more than 50 years of Romulan isolation, those who witnessed their awesome size and imposing presence could not deny the effectiveness of their design in intimidating would-be foes merely through the act of decloaking. When it became obvious that the ship's numerous offensive and defensive systems were more than capable of backing up such intimidation tactics, it quickly helped to cement the Romulan Star Empire's place as a power to be reckoned with. Although the face of the Romulan people had changed, and a new Romulan Republic began to supplant the old Empire in the early 25th century, the imposing form of the D'deridex class was still a valued asset, even if it was now intended to inspire hope more than fear. The D'deridex class was equipped with a Romulan battle cloaking device. This cloaking device could be used in combat, though weapons and shields were inoperative while it was active. The class was powered via a singularity core; the standard D'deridex class featured four forward-facing and three aft-facing weapons emplacements, while the refit models featured an additional aft-facing emplacement.[1]
