The Romulan War Eagle class (WE) heavy cruiser was a variant of the Warbird class light cruiser, and was introduced in 2250. Converting the Warbird class to the War Eagle class was a very expensive and time-consuming procedure, which required the ship to be almost completely rebuilt. Compared to other cruisers, the War Eagle class was generally undersized, but its saving grace was the Type-R plasma torpedo and the cloaking device.

The WE-type featured a crew complement of 200, a capacity of six shuttlecraft, two science labs, one transporter, and one tractor beam emitter. The WE was armed with one plasma torpedo launcher and four banks of Type-1 phasers. The WE remained in service until 2272, when it was superseded by the WER-type refit, introduced in 2266. The WER added two banks of Type-3 phasers.

Several variants of the Warbird were produced, including the War Eagle class in 2250, the Commando Eagle class in 2258, and the King Eagle class in 2278.[1]
