While conducting an archaeological dig on planet M-113, studying the remains left behind by a long-dead humanoid civilization, Nancy Crater was killed by the M-113 creature. Nancy's husband, Professor Robert Crater, was initially revulsed by it, though he accepted that it was a sentient lifeform and helped it to continue to survive. A year (or perhaps two; Crater's memory was unreliable on the date) later, on Stardate 1513.1, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 visited the planet, to conduct the archaeologists' required annual physical examinations and resupply. During the course of their visit, the crew discovered that Nancy had been killed and replaced by the creature, which was believed to be the last survivor of its species; it fed upon salt, which it drained from the bodies of its victims. It also had incredible telepathic abilities, and could make others perceive it in any form it wished. When it was discovered, however, the creature had boarded the Enterprise, where it killed several crew members, and it was killed while attempting to feed upon Captain Kirk. The species was believed to then be extinct.[1] Trelane had a stuffed and mounted example of the species in his parlor on Gothos on Stardate 2124.5, but given his demonstrated abilities it was unclear if it was genuine. Regardless, Trelane vaporized it with a phaser.[2] At least some members of the species survived, however, as one boarded the U.S.S. Cerritos NCC-75567 and attempted to feed off of Commander Jack Ransom in 2380.[3]
