Murph was an amorphous life form of unknown origin, and was named by Rok-Tahk. Murph had an uncanny knack for eating metallic objects of all kinds[1] — even surviving the detonation of multiple explosive devices it had ingested[2] — but also for landing on a console and pressing just the right button needed at a given time, apparently at random.[1]
