Thomas Leighton was a scientist who specialized in the creation of synthetic food. He was a survivor of the massacre on Tarsus IV in 2187, which occurred after a fungus devastated the colony's crops; Governor Kodos seized emergency powers and ordered the execution of half the population — 4000 people. Twenty years later, Leighton was one of nine eyewitnesses who could have identified Kodos, who was presumed dead when relief workers found a burned corpse. Leighton was convinced in 2207 that not only was Kodos still alive, but that he had assumed the identity of Anton Karidian, the lead of a traveling theatre troupe, the Karidian Company of Players. Shortly after bringing his suspicions to the attention of his friend and fellow Tarsus IV survivor James T. Kirk, Leighton was murdered on Stardate 2817.6 by Lenore Karidian, who sought to silence any who could prove that her father was actually Kodos.[1]
