Nuclear fission was a process that generated energy by splitting an atomic nucleus into two, smaller nuclei.[1] The automated lithium-cracking station on Delta Vega used a fission reactor, which was rigged to detonate as a failsafe when the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 attempted to maroon a mutated Gary Mitchell on the planet on Stardate 1313.3.[2]
