Asteroids were small chunks of rock, too small to retain an atmosphere, as their gravity wasn't strong enough to keep atmospheric gases close to their surfaces. Some asteroids were rich in minerals and resources, including precious metals.[1] Observation posts along the Romulan Neutral Zone were constructed on asteroids.[2] The colony ship Yonada was created from a hollowed-out asteroid by the Fabrini.[3] The Diviner constructed a prison colony on the asteroid Tars Lamora to both conceal his true goal of finding the U.S.S. Protostar NX-76884, as well as providing materials for trade, such as the rare mineral chimerium,[4] which could be used to generate cloaking fields.[5]
