A Federation protectorate under the Prime Directive,[2] the Amerind culture appeared to have been planted on the fourth planet[1] of the Epsilon Beta system[2] several thousand years ago by the Preservers,[3] and by 2210 had grown to a population estimated to be between 18.3[1] and 50 million.[2] The presence of a modern, automated deflector system on the planet as well as the near-perfect similarity between the Amerinds and ancient Earth's Native Americans support this fact. When last contacted, the Amerinds were in an early tribal stage, peaceful and prosperous, though not overly developed technologically.[3] On Reference Stardate 2/2306 (June 2223), the Federation was planning to send a cultural observation team to the planet.[2]
