Like the Snipe and Warbird classes, the Battlehawk class was an older Romulan design. The original Battlehawk class was built in 2250, in competition with the Warbird class, but the Romulans evidently preferred the latter class, as they produced many more Warbirds than Battlehawks. Originally classified as a "second-class cruiser," the Battlehawk was nevertheless treated as a destroyer.

The Battlehawk (BH) class featured a crew complement of 160, a capacity of seven shuttlecraft, two science labs, 1 transporter, and two tractor beam emitters. The BH was armed with two Type-G plasma torpedo tubes and four banks of Type-1 phasers. It remained in service until 2272, when it was superseded by the BHR-type Battlehawk refit, introduced in 2266. The BHR was armed with 2 Type-S plasma torpedo tubes, 2 Type-F plasma torpedo tubes, four banks of Type-1 phasers, and two banks of Type-3 phasers.

The Commando Hawk class was another variant of the Battlehawk class, introduced in 2258.[1]
