- Saru becomes the first Kelpien to make contact with an alien race, after modifying technology taken from the Ba'ul. He is met by Lieutenant Philippa Georgiou, who lands on Kaminar in a shuttlecraft. She offers to take him off world, but warns him that Starfleet General Order One means he will be unlikely to ever return, as the rest of his species is not yet warp capable. Saru accepts her offer, leaving his sister, Siranna, without having said goodbye.[1][2]

- The Federation and the Klingon Empire engage in an "inconclusive" battle at Donatu V.[5][6]
- Michael Burnham enters the Vulcan Science Academy, the first Human to do so.[7]
- Five weeks before the launch of the Constitution class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, currently designated NX-0002, Ensign Una serves aboard the ship during its shakedown cruise under Admiral Rasmussen. With the assistance of the newly-launched Constitution, the NX-0002 crew is able to prevent the theft of their vessel by a group of Klingons disguised as Humans, albeit at the cost of most of the crew, including Admiral Rasmussen.[8]
- The Constitution class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 is launched, under the command of Captain Robert April.[9] Jonathan Archer dies the next day at his home in upstate New York.[10]

- Having been rejected by the Vulcan Expeditionary Group[11] after graduating from the Vulcan Science Academy, Michael Burnham joins Starfleet and is assigned to the Walker class U.S.S. Shenzhou NCC-1227 under Captain Philippa Georgiou.[6]
