Cromwell was the launch director for an orbital nuclear weapons platform at McKinley Rocket Base in 1968. Gary Seven hid in the trunk of Cromwell's car in order to gain access to the launchpad, so that he could prevent the weapons from being launched into space. When the rocket malfunctioned and it appeared that the warhead would detonate over the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, thereby triggering World War III, Cromwell called to inform the President of the United States of the situation. Fortunately, the rocket detonated 104 miles above the surface, and spurred the nations of Earth to reach an agreement banning such weapons in the future.[1]
