- RSD 2/17: Lieutenant Joshua Scott attends Command School. Again, his record is annotated to show remarkable skill and the ability to make rapid decisions. It is also noted that he has become a self-educated expert on the Orions. Upon graduation, Scott is posted to Argelius as an assistant to the ambassador's Orion Desk.[1]
- RSD 2/17: Lancelot Worthington III first hears of a Romulan anti-cloaking device.[1]
- RSD 2/17: A second crop failure panics many of the colonists on Sheridan's World. Interracial tensions heighten, and the local administrators are forced to employ a local constabulary to keep order. These individuals are only partially effective, as they are forbidden to use drastic force.[2]
January
- RSD 2/1701: Federation Ambassador Helen Jarvis, kidnapped by Orion terrorists, is freed by Star Fleet Intelligence agents.[3]
February
- RSD 2/1702.15 (15 February): Nearly two years ahead of the originally scheduled start date, the three Operation Dixie ships—Dixie Queen, Dixie Lady, and Dixie Princess—depart for Klingon space on a five-year mission to learn the fleet composition and strength of the Klingon Imperial Navy. Dixie succeeds in delivering some information, but all operatives are listed as missing in action.[4][5][3]
- RSD 2/1702.26 (26 February): Launched from Federation Sensor Outpost Epsilon IX, a remote-controlled sensor drone detects a strange electrical cloud near the Klingon base of Mera Zine. Three Klingon D-7M K't'inga class cruisers attack the cloud and are instantly vaporized, proving the object is capable of incredible destruction.[6][3]
- RSD 2/1702.28 (28 February): The Epsilon IX Station is vaporized by the electrical cloud, which is heading directly toward Earth. Unitl it is destroyed, the station continues transmitting a live video signal to Star Fleet Command via subspace radio.[6][3]
March
- RSD 2/1703.27 (27 March): While on Vulcan, Commander Spock detects powerful thought emanations coming from the electrical cloud. He travels to Earth.[6][3]
April
- RSD 2/1704: The new Enterprise class heavy cruiser is established with the christening of the newly-refitted U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. The ship is to be commanded by Captain Willard Decker, hand-picked for the job by Admiral James T. Kirk.[7]
- Stardate 7410.2/RSD 2/1704.01 (1 April): Admiral James T. Kirk is informed of the cloud's movements. After meeting with Admiral Heihachiro Nogura, Kirk immediately takes over command of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, temporarily demoting Captain Willard Decker to first officer. The ship's christening ceremony is put on hold for the crisis.[6][3]
- RSD 2/1704.02 (2 April): The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 watches a live, albeit delayed, report showing the destruction of the Epsilon IX Station. Spock arrives from Vulcan and rejoins the Enterprise crew as chief science officer.[6][3]
- RSD 2/1704.04 (4 April): The Enterprise intercepts the cloud. The crew discovers that the cloud is a huge vessel, the heart of which contains V'Ger, which is soon revealed to be the ancient Voyager VI probe, which was presumed lost centuries earlier. Decker and Lieutenant Ilia of Delta IV are listed as "missing in action."[6][7][5][3]

- RSD 2/1705: The V'Ger incident enhances Kirk's fame—and makes him too valuable to risk in active command. After a short shakedown cruise of the new Enterprise, Kirk returns to desk duty, and is eventually assigned to testing and inspection on detached service from Star Fleet Academy. Commander Spock's reserve commission is reactivated; he stays on with a promotion and assignment as Captain of the Enterprise.[8][7][5][3]
- RSD 2/1705: A Romulan squadron skirts the Neutral Zone and arrives at Ectair, a neutral world within the Federation. The Reliant class[9] light cruiser U.S.S. Ardent NCC-25231, also in the area, challenges the Romulans' presence. The senior Ectarian planetary official personally intervense and mediates discussions.[10][3]
- RSD 2/1705.02 (2 May): Commodore Bram Harmonson receives a list of Romulan agents in the Triangle from Klingon Imperial Intelligence.[11]
- RSD 2/1705.11 (11 May): Commodore Bram Harmonson is responsible for breaking the Romulan spy ring in the Triangle. As a reward, he is given the post of Star Fleet Diplomatic Attache. He secretly contacts Captain Kai zantai Mik, and they discuss how the Klingon Empire can gain control of the Tasor system. Harmonson decides to lure Federation ships into Klingon space to convince the Organians of the Federation's aggressiveness. Imperial intelligence gives him full discretion.[11]

- RSD 2/1706: The Reliant class research cruiser U.S.S. Triumph NCC-26228, operating in a rimward frontier area, is listed as missing in action after failing to transmit a scheduled report. The U.S.S. Regulator NCC-26254 is dispatched to search for the missing vessel.[3]
August
- RSD 2/1708: Star Fleet Intelligence dispatches Project Grey Ghost to gather information on the capacities, commitments, and deployment of forces of the Romulan Star Empire.[5]
- RSD 2/1708: Captain Ian Vellacora is reassigned to Starbase 12, pending the completion of the Loknar class frigate U.S.S. Arkadelphia NCC-2792.[12][3]
September
- RSD 2/1709: The U.S.S. Arkadelphia NCC-2792 is transferred to Starbase 12. Over the next two months, crewmembers are appointed to the new vessel.[12][3]
October
- RSD 2/1710: Star Fleet begins receiving disquieting intelligence reports concerning the Organians.[3]
December
- RSD 2/1712: The Asparax Confederation is formed. It is a loosely-knit coalition of four planets in the Klingon Neutral Zone. Territorial limits are established, defining Asparaxian space.[3]
- RSD 2/1712: The Reliant class research cruiser U.S.S. Regulator NCC-26254 is listed as missing in action after being dispatched on RSD 2/1707 to search for the U.S.S. Triumph NCC-26228.[7]
- RSD 2/1712: The Makin class Assault Ship is introduced; 68 will be constructed.[9]
