Phillips was an astrobiologist assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2268. During an initial survey of Alpha Carinae II during the testing of the M-5 computer on Stardate 4731.3, Phillips was picked due to the experience of having surveyed twenty-nine biologically similar planets.[1]
