Ulysses class (SFC)
The original concept for a Federation dreadnought (DN) was to include more capabilities, but featured only a minimal increase in firepower over the Constitution class command cruiser (CC). The DN was introduced in 2269, and had a crew complement of 500, a capacity of twelve shuttlecraft, ten science labs, four transporters, and two tractor beam emitters, with a weapons load of four photon torpedo tubes and ten banks of Type-1 phasers. The DN remained in production until 2293.
This was found to be inadequate after other powers began fielding dreadnoughts that reflected an approximate 50% increase in firepower over their respective heavy cruisers. During wartime, each fleet was commanded by an admiral in a dreadnought, but during peacetime, the ships were typically docked at a starbase, as they were too expensive to operate. To address these concerns, the DN+ refit was introduced in 2281. It increased the crew complement to 520, the shuttle capacity to fifteen, added two more transporter facilities for a total of six, added a third tractor beam emitter, and increased the armament to six photon torpedo tubes, one Type-G missile launcher, and twelve banks of Type-1 phasers. The DN+ remained in production until 2303.
Having the first dreadnought was both a boon and a curse to the Federation, which found the original DN weaker than those it faced in opposition. The improved dreadnought (DNG) was introduced in 2291 to bring the DN up to spec with the refitted dreadnoughts of other powers. The DNG had a crew complement of 540, featured stronger shields, a capacity of fifteen shuttles, six science labs, five transporters, and four tractor beam emitters, and armed with six photon torpedo tubes, four Type-G missile launchers, twelve banks of Type-1 phasers, and two banks of Type-3 phasers. The DNG remained in production until 2313.
In an attempt to add additional firepower to the DNG, the heavy dreadnought (DNH) was introduced in 2301 and represented the maximum amount of weaponry capable of being used on the dreadnought spaceframe. It had a crew complement of 540, featured a capacity of sixteen shuttles, among other improvements, though the armament remained unchanged.[1]
