The Second World War was a global conflict on Earth that began in 1939. The belligerent nations, an alliance known as the Axis Powers, consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan, who were opposed by the Allied Powers, consisting of the United Kingdom, France, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and the Republic of China.[1] The United States of America's entry into the war on the side of the Allies was delayed by a growing pacifist movement in that country, however, and the aid that they gave to the Allies was insufficient to prevent the Nazi regime in Germany from developing nuclear weapons, resulting in their eventual victory.[2]
