A recorder-marker buoy was used to preserve a record of a ship's logs in case of its loss or destruction. The recorder-marker buoy of the S.S. Valiant was recovered by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 near the Galactic Barrier on Stardate 1312.4.[1] When the Enterprise attempted to launch its own buoy during a tense First Contact with the First Federation, it was destroyed.[2]
