The Ptolemy class tug was authorized for production by the Star Fleet Appropriation of Stardate 0965.[1] The U.S.S. Ptolemy NCC-3801 was commissioned on Reference Stardate 1/8510 (October 2185). Limited appropriations, however, resulted in only 15 vessels being completed.[2] Ptolemy class tugs were capable of towing a wide variety of standardized transport containers, including the Mark I, for liquids; the Mark II, for dry bulk products; the Mark III, for refrigerated goods; the Mark IV, for people, effectively transforming the Ptolemy class vessel into a starliner; and the Mark V, for other bulk products.[1]
The Kepler class variant, authorized by the Star Fleet Appropriation of Stardate 3640, was commissioned on Reference Stardate 1/8812 (December 2188). This was followed by the Doppler and Dollond variant classes, authorized by the Star Fleet Appropriation of 4990 and launched on Reference Stardate 1/9102 (February 2191), with the commissioning of the U.S.S. Doppler NCC-3831 and the U.S.S. Dollond NCC-3900, respectively.[1][2]
