Gorns were reptilian–humanoids with a high degree of intelligence and personal bravery. They were physically as large as or even larger than the [[Kzinti (SFC)|Kzinti]], and were taller than, and almost twice the mass of, the average [[Humans (SFC)|Human]].

The Gorn Confederation consisted of three sentient Gorn races (all developed on separate planets, but are so nearly identical they must have come from common stock) joined into a single political unit. Their area of space included relatively few habitable planets and, apparently, no native sentient races beyond themselves.

The Gorn first met the Federation in war, but this was quickly settled when it became apparent that it had been a misunderstanding. During the peace talks, the Federation discovered that the Gorns had experienced a continuing series of armed disagreements with the Romulans concerning their common border.

The Gorn were generally not aggressive unless provoked, and tended to be highly territorial. The Gorn fleet was small, but made up of high quality ships. Like the Romulans, the Gorn used plasma torpedoes for their heavy weapon to accompany their phasers. Because their big weapon was the plasma torpedo, the Gorn ships needed to get in close to be most effective. Gorn ships were very difficult to damage, with many redundant systems and large hulls. Gorn were also very dangerous in hand-to-hand combat, and carried more marines aboard their ships than usual.[1]
