The Federation Starship Ranger was the lead vessel of the Ranger class battlecruisers. In 2270, the Ranger was part of a task force sent to intercept a Klingon fleet massing in the Caleb system, within Federation space near the Romulan Neutral Zone. The ensuing Battle of Caleb IV proved to be a costly defeat for the Federation. The Klingons had the advantages of a previously-unknown cloaking device, surprise, and greater numbers, and of the ten Starfleet vessels sent to the system, the Ranger was one of only three to survive the engagement.[1]
