Once a Class M planet, Exo III slowly froze as its parent star steadily faded over the course of half a million years,[1] with the mean surface temperature dropping to -50°C. The native population, never having developed spaceflight,[2] fled underground to escape the dramatic cooling of their homeworld, eventually creating a servant race of androids. The androids eventually rebelled, however, killing their masters, whom they called the "Old Ones." All but one of the androids were eventually deactivated or destroyed; the final android, Ruk, was discovered by Roger Korby in 2203, still maintaining the machines. Korby, near death from exposure to the planet's arctic environment, used the machines to transfer his consciousness into an android body, and to create the androids Brown and Andrea. When the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 arrived in orbit on Stardate 2712.4, Korby attempted to use it to insert androids throughout the Federation, beginning with the ship's captain, James T. Kirk. Kirk rebelled violently against Korby's plans, resulting in the death of all of the androids — including Korby, who took his own life when confronted with how dramatically he had changed.[1]
