Andrea was an android created by Roger Korby on Exo III some time after 2261. Korby used the devices he found, left behind by the extinct Exoan civilization — referred to as the "Old Ones" by Ruk — to create companions for himself: a duplicate of his deceased partner, Dr. Brown, and Andrea. When the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 arrived in 2266, Korby's fiancée, Christine Chapel, was aboard. Disgusted with Korby's creation, she disdainfully referred to Andrea as "a mechanical geisha."
Korby also created an android duplicate of Captain Kirk—ostensibly to impress the captain, but also to further his goal of quietly replacing people throughout the Federation with android duplicates. Kirk opposed Korby's plan, both violently and subtly; he seduced Andrea, confusing her limited programming and causing her to kill the duplicate Kirk when she mistook him for the original Kirk and he rebuffed her advances. When the situation was ultimately resolved, it resulted in the deaths of two security officers—Matthews and Rayburn—Kirk's android doppelgänger, Brown, Ruk, Andrea, and Korby himself.[1]
