Aboard starships such as the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, shipboard phasers were controlled from a separate facility within the ship. On Stardate 1709.2, the commanding officer of the phaser control room aboard the Enterprise was Lieutenant Robert Tomlinson, who was killed during battle with a Romulan Bird of Prey by a toxic phaser coolant leak.[1]
