Dr. Simon van Gelder was a psychiatrist and was assigned as the associate director of the Tantalus V penal asylum in mid-2266, where he invented the neural neutralizer, which he hoped would provide therapeutic benefits to his patients. Six months later, on Stardate 2715.1, the ruthless and ambitious Dr. Tristan Adams used van Gelder's invention against him, making van Gelder appear to be psychotic, and took over complete control of the asylum. Van Gelder managed to escape to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, where Adams' crimes were eventually exposed. Adams was, himself, exposed to the neural neutralizer, but was killed when no one else was around to turn it off in time. Following Adams' death, van Gelder was restored to his previous mental state, and assumed the position of director of the asylum.[1]
