Robots were mechanical automatons designed to perform a particular function; they were commonly used in manufacturing processes.[1] When faced with a highly stressful first contact with the First Federation, Lieutenant David Bailey asked, "What are we, robots?"[2] Automated cargo vessels were often used in the 23rd century, and were referred to as "robot ships;" these vessels included the S.S. Woden,[3] and the Antares type NCC-G1465.[4]
