In 2267, Yeoman Mears was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. On Stardate 2821.5, Mears was selected to be part of a scientific survey expedition aboard the Shuttlecraft Galileo, which was sent to study the so-called "Murasaki Effect" of the Murasaki 312 quasar-like phenomenon. The shuttle crashed on Taurus II, a planet within the phenomenon, and several members of the team were killed before the shuttle could be repaired.[1]
