This unnamed ensign was assigned to Engineering in the Operations Division aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2269. On Stardate 5392.4, he assisted Lt. Cdr. Scott in the transporter room during a particularly difficult transporter operation. When they discovered that they had beamed aboard Cyrano Jones and several dozen tribbles, Captain Kirk ordered the ensign to seal off the area.[1] The ensign was drawn to resemble episode writer David Gerrold; he had hoped to make a cameo in the original Star Trek series, but the second tribble episode was cut from filming in the show's third and final season. When the episode was revived, he wrote into the script that the engineer looked like him, and the animators drew him in.[2]
