The Federation Starship Confederate, a Constitution class vessel, was launched in 2269. The Confederate mounted an experimental transwarp drive system devised by Dr. Virgil Brahms, which suffered a critical malfunction immediately after launch, leaving it stranded light years away in the Romulan Neutral Zone. The crew evacuated in the primary hull, while the secondary hull was captured by Romulans and towed to Atnox Depot, near the border of the Neutral Zone, for study. The Confederate was soon recovered by a team from Starfleet Intelligence, which included U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 chief engineer Montgomery Scott, but had to be sacrificed in order to prevent the transwarp drive prototype from falling into Romulan hands, while the team escaped to safety aboard the Enterprise.[1]
Note
The Confederate's registry number was given in "None But the Brave" as NX-1713, but this conflicts with the U.S.S. Monitor NCC-1713 and has been disregarded.
