Reference Stardate 1/5101 through 1/5112
- RSD 1/51: The Kepler series probe is launched.[1]
- RSD 1/51 through 1/94: Espionage activity escalates throughout Orion space. Estimated Star Fleet Intelligence deaths for the period are in excess of 5,000. Slowed by the FUMC, Orion economic growth does not recover. Federation-Orion enmity grows.[2]
January
- RSD 1/5101.18 (18 January): The independent trader Millie Sue and an unknown scout vessel exchange fire. Though the Millie Sue damages and chases away the attacking ship, the exchange leaves her without warp capability. Two Star Fleet ships respond to the trader ship's distress call, and rescue all hands. A nearby destroyer-class ship of unknown configuration also evades the larger Star Fleet vessels. Later examination of the data points to the probability that both unknown vessels were of Klingon origin. The encounter leads the Federation to press Orion sources for information on this unfamiliar race.[3]
March
- RSD 1/5103.27 (27 March): Freeloader, the first and most notorious Orion free port in the Triangle, is officially opened with the dedication of its spaceport facility. This marks the beginning of large-scale trade operations in the region, which is soon to become the hottest and most open trade area in the known galaxy.[4][2]

- RSD 1/5105.02 (2 May): A new threat to galactic peace makes itself evident when the Federation starship U.S.S. Sentry confronts the Devisor, a warship from the Klingon Empire, near Gamma Demetrius. Captain Francis Benoit of the Sentry and Captain Korall of the Devisor clash over a family that crossed into Federation space seeking asylum. Numerous intelligence operatives had denied the likelihood of another hostile race on Federation borders, but the first contact between the two powers leads immediately to conflict. The Botchok Planetary Congress issues the Orion Neutrality Act, declaring the Rigel system and all its colonies unaligned with any spacefaring power and free to trade with any. All military vessels in Orion space must inform the BPC of their location and iteneraries. Klingon raids on Federation shipping often masquerade as Orion pirates, and vice versa. Information obtained from spies and Klingon prisoners leads to the inescapable conclusion that the Klingons and Romulans have met. That they seem to be old and bitter foes comes as a relief. The "Klingon Menace" begins to overshadow the concern over renewed conflict with the Romulans.[1][5][6][7][2][8]
