Captain Newton was the commanding officer of the U.S.S. Galen, an Olympic class medical ship, in the late 24th century. In 2387, the Galen was dispatched as the lead vessel of a group of several Olympic class vessels to offer assistance in the evacuation of Romulus and Remus when the Hobus star went supernova.[1] The shockwave propagated through subspace, however, and reached the system in a matter of hours, rather than the weeks anticipated[2] by Ambassador Spock.[3] By the time the Galen and her sister ships arrived, the planets had already been destroyed,[1] killing billions.[2] Newton hailed the Narada, a mining ship from the Romulan Mining Guild that had also arrived in the system too late, and offered to provide aid to any refugees they may be carrying. The Narada's captain, Nero, enraged with grief, instead transported explosives aboard the Federation ships, destroying them and killing all aboard.[1]
