The Federation Starship Galen, an Olympic class vessel commanded by Captain Newton, was the lead vessel of a group of relief ships sent in to help evacuate the Romulus system after the Hobus star went supernova in 2387. The shockwave propagated through subspace, as predicted by Ambassador Spock, but it traveled far faster than anticipated, and struck the system within hours, rather than the weeks estimated. As a result, the Galen and her sister ships arrived soon after both Romulus and Remus had been destroyed. Upon arrival in the system, they encountered the Narada, a mining vessel commanded by Nero. The grieving Romulan miner took advantage of the fleet's offer of aid: he transported mining explosives to the ships, rather than the refugees he claimed to be sending, destroying the Galen and every ship in the relief fleet.[1]
