Charlie Evans was the sole survivor when his parents' research vessel[1] crashed on Thasus in 2193. Charlie, who was only three years old at the time, had limited supplies and a handful of microtapes to learn from. The Thasians, who preferred to isolate themselves to the point that their existence was considered to be a rumor, revealed themselves to the boy, and granted him the ability to use powers like their own in order to help him survive in the harsh environment.
Charlie was rescued fourteen years later by the U.S.S. Antares. The Antares' Captain Ramart rushed to get Charlie off of his ship as quickly as possible, having grown fearful of the boy's abilities in the short time he was aboard the ship, and when Ramart thought the Antares was far enough away to be safe from Charlie, he attempted to contact the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, in order to warn Captain Kirk, but Charlie — intent on reaching Colony Alpha V, where he had relatives waiting to take him in — caused the baffle plate on the ship's[2] Nerst generator's[1] energy pile to disappear, destroying the ship.
Charlie displayed an impressive range of powers, able to make objects and even people appear or disappear at will, as well as the ability to cause them to change form, such as when he turned Yeoman Tina Lawton into an iguana. His abilities had limits, however, and Charlie became vulnerable when Kirk and the Enterprise crew forced him to take direct control of the ship's systems. The Thasians approached the Enterprise soon thereafter, retrieving Charlie for safekeeping on Thasus, and undoing the damage that he had caused aboard the Enterprise. The Antares, however, was beyond their ability to restore.[2]
