Antares B III,[3] more commonly known, simply, as Antares, was the third of five planets[1] orbiting Alpha Scorpii B,[3] a small yellow star and the secondary star in the system.[1] Antares was the site of a Human colony, and by Reference Stardate 2/2306 (June 2223), it was a full member of the United Federation of Planets and boasted a population of 4 billion.[2]
The largest interstellar trade center outside the Rigel system, Antares was the commercial and financial capital of the Federation. This was due in large part to Antares' central location and to the cultural predominance of Antarean business scientists. Many said that if a commodity existed anywhere in the galaxy, one could find it on Antares. With the exception of the slave trade, Antares had no port-of-call restrictions regarding the nature of goods imported to the planet.[2]
Antares was the home of many interesting lower life forms, such as the Antarean dryworm.[1] A popular trade item, Antarean "glow water"[4] was actually dryworms suspended in a life-supporting liquid.[1] Phentora, a grain that grew only on Antares, was used in the distillation and production of Antarean brandy. A favorite beverage on many Federation worlds, it was known for its pale blue color.[3]
