Thomas Leighton was a scientist who specialized in the creation of synthetic food. He was a survivor of the massacre on Tarsus IV in 2247, which occurred after a fungus devastated the colony's crops; Governor Kodos seized emergency powers and ordered the execution of half the population — 4000 people, including Leighton's parents. Twenty years later, Leighton was one of nine eyewitnesses who could have identified Kodos, who was presumed dead when relief workers found a burned corpse. Leighton was convinced in 2267 that not only was Kodos still alive, but that he had assumed the identity of Anton Karidian, the lead of a traveling theatre troupe, The Karidian Players.
