Rawlins was the chief geologist assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2268. During an initial survey of Alpha Carinae II during the testing of the M-5 computer on Stardate 4731.3, Captain Kirk picked Rawlins for a landing party, but the computer picked Ensign Carstairs instead, due to the ensign's previous experience in the area.[1]
