Ensign Carstairs was a geologist assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2268. During an initial survey of Alpha Carinae II during the testing of the M-5 computer on Stardate 4731.3, Carstairs was picked due to having served on merchant marine freighters in the area and having once visited the planet on a geological survey for a mining company.[1]
