The Romulan King Eagle class command cruiser was a variant of the War Eagle class, and was introduced in 2278. As new Klingon technology was assimilated, the Romulans found that their War Eagle design could be further improved, resulting in the King Eagle class, but as newer designs were beginning to appear, it was considered a waste of resources to convert War Eagles to the new class. When the General War became inevitable, the operational problems of integrating different generations of ship designs to the same tactical formations became clear, and the Empire reversed its decision and converted a number of War Eagles to King Eagles for use as squadron leaders. These ships were found to be extremely useful and more were produced for general combat purposes.

The King Eagle featured a crew complement of 250, a capacity of nine shuttlecraft, two science labs, one transporter, and two tractor beam emitters. It was armed with one torpedo tube dedicated to Type-R plasma torpedoes, two Type-F plasma torpedo tubes, four banks of Type-1 phasers, and two banks of Type-3 phasers.

Some time later, the Tactical King Eagle (TKE) variant was introduced; it featured a crew of 430, a capacity of five shuttles, two science labs, two transporters, and two tractor beam emitters. The TKE was armed with with one torpedo tube dedicated to Type-R plasma torpedoes, two Type-F plasma torpedo tubes, four banks of Type-1 phasers, and six banks of Type-3 phasers.

Several variants of the Warbird were produced, including the War Eagle class in 2250, the Commando Eagle class in 2258, and the King Eagle class in 2278.[1]
