As an ensign, Robert April served aboard the Einstein class U.S.S. Gates. April noted in his personal log at the time that he had grown frustrated with the inability of the class to conduct some repairs, which forced the ship to return to Starbase 9 after observing a supernova.[1]
For three years, April served as first officer aboard the Baton Rouge class U.S.S. Los Angeles, after which he requested a transfer to the Starfleet Logistics Command to pursue his dream of designing a new starship class with more robust, self-sufficient capabilities.[1]
April was the first captain of the Constitution class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701,[2][3] and upon his promotion was succeeded by his first officer, Christopher Pike.[2][1][3]
