In June 2256, Sylvia Tilly was selected as chief engineer for a cadet cruise aboard a Malachowski class vessel commanded by Captain Anton Schaefer; this was highly unusual, given her status as a junior, or third-year cadet, but her selection was justified on the basis of her excellent academic record. Tilly was so excited by the opportunity, she set up a triple-layer alarm system to wake her the morning that cadet cruise assignments were posted, though she worried that the announcement was a prank by Cadet Finnegan. Tilly was tasked, along with Cadet Savea, to program an advanced phaser training course on the Academy's holodeck, and the pair utilized actual combat data from the field to make it as realistic as possible.
