In June 2256, Sylvia Tilly was selected as chief engineer for a cadet cruise aboard a Malachowski class vessel commanded by Captain Anton Schaefer; this was highly unusual, given her status as a junior, or third-year cadet, but her selection was justified on the basis of her excellent academic record. Tilly was so excited by the opportunity, she set up a triple-layer alarm system to wake her the morning that cadet cruise assignments were posted, though she worried that the announcement was a prank by Cadet Finnegan. Tilly was tasked, along with Cadet Savea, to program an advanced phaser training course on the Academy's holodeck, and the pair utilized actual combat data from the field to make it as realistic as possible.[1]

Almost immediately upon departing the Sol system for Vulcan, however, the cadet cruise was lured into a trap by Klingon forces led by J'Ula. Responding to a distress call from Cyrano Jones of the S.S. Fortuna, the ship was attacked by Klingon vessels and boarded. Captain Schaefer was killed in the attack, leaving command to the ship's cadet first officer.[2] The ship was soon joined by the U.S.S. Sebrova NCC-1309 under Captain Thy'kir Shran.[3] They attempted to notify the U.S.S. Ticonderoga NCC-1650 of the situation, but before the Sebrova could escort them back to Earth, all three ships were again set upon in the Arucanis Arm by Klingon forces.[4]

When it became apparent that the Klingons were targeting the dilithium mine on Corvan II, Captain Shran ordered the cadet ship to leave immediately and warn the colony, while the Sebrova and Ticonderoga delayed the Klingon advance. Tilly was able to assist the miners in undoing Klingon sabotage to the mining equipment that could have destroyed the planet.[5] When the situation was resolved and the ship returned to Earth, Tilly remarked that, after their experiences, "going back to Professor Schirmer's Advanced Physics class doesn't seem as scary."[6] Several months later, Tilly was on a second cadet training cruise, this time aboard the Crossfield class U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031,[7] fulfilling her hopes of serving aboard a ship of that class.[1]
