In January 1996, after the Eugenics Wars ended with the defeat of the "supermen," Khan Noonien Singh and 96 of his followers, with the aid of Gary Seven, stole a prototype DY-100 class vessel, which they named the Botany Bay, from the top-secret Area 51 facility in Nevada. They escaped in cryogenic freeze in the hope of colonizing another world, though this fact was concealed from the general public.[1][2]
The Botany Bay was recovered more than 200 years later, in 2267, by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. Khan and his followers briefly seized control of the Enterprise, and left the Botany Bay adrift in space.[1]
