Starbase 12 was located on a planet in the {{link|Prime|Gamma 400 system{{link|Prime|, and served as the command base for the^[1] Mutara Sector.^[2] When the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 discovered the S.S. Botany Bay, the ship was originally taken in tow while the Enterprise set course for Starbase 12.^[1]
