Prime Timeline
(The root of all realities)

Samuel T. Cogley was an attorney in the mid-23rd century and jovially agreed that he was also "an obsessive crackpot who [had] escaped from his keeper." On Stardate 2948.9, he was retained for the defense of Starfleet Captain James T. Kirk on the recommendation of Lieutenant Areel Shaw, a member of the Starfleet Judge Advocate General and an old friend of Kirk's, when Kirk faced court martial. While Cogley had a computer that he could use in the course of his work, he preferred to use traditional print books instead, where he claimed that he could "know the law, the ancient concepts in their own language" and that he could "learn the intent of the men who wrote them." Cogley boasted that he had "thousands" of books in his library. In the courtroom, Cogley was "well known" for theatrical stunts in his impassioned defenses of his clients.[1]
